Lost Art: The Backward Lateral

Watch the above videos and tell me those weren’t great football plays. Of course they were because they involved one of the least used, but must exciting plays in the game of football. The backward lateral.

The forward pass was legalized in 1906, which brought about the demise of the backward lateral. But why? The backward lateral is arguably one of the most exciting plays in the game of football. The ball ends up in the hands of defensive lineman. Linebackers zig-zagging across the field for touchdowns. Unmatchable excitement. And of course the once in a lifetime, miracle touchdowns. But these types of plays, rarely happen more than twice a year. In desperation, last second, hail marry alternatives. But why not integrate these plays into the every down play of the game.

I’m not saying to have your offensive tackle every play, but encourage the backward lateral. Make the game more exciting. The NFL is known as the no fun league, so why not make things more exciting with plays like these. The heart stopping plays that make people jump up from their couches and say “I can’t believe that just happened.” It encourages scoring, and would make the game more exciting. A lateral per play keeps the people in the stands. #bringbackthelateral
